DEANâS LIST
The deanâs list is a registry of students who have obtained excellent grades during a semester or term. The standard for making the deanâs list varies among universities, but they all recognize high-achieving students and quality academic work. Typically, at least a grade point average of 3.5 is needed to be listed on the deanâs list. Usually the deanâs list applies only to undergraduate students, and the names of the students who made it to the deanâs list are announced after each term. At some universities, the deanâs list may also be called the presidentâs list or the chancellorâs list. If a student makes it to the deanâs list for several consecutive terms, he or she will likely be selected for an honor society. Honor societies are groups that recognize excellence. Various honor societies have been established by various disciplines. Honor societies invite students who meet their requirements to join their membership. The organization usually has an induction ceremony to take in new members. Most of these organizations invite students to become members and do not accept unsolicited members. Observers at graduation ceremonies can distinguish honor graduates because each organization offers something that signifies membership like honor cords, medals, patches, or hoods to decorate the graduateâs cap and gown. The oldest honor societies in the United States are the Golden Key, Phi Beta Kappa, and Phi Kappa Phi.
The Latin term cum laude means âwith praise. Those who graduate with honors will be classified as cum laude, magna cum laude, or summa cum laude. At most universities, a cum laude graduate typically holds a grade point average of 3.5â3.7. A magna cum laude graduate usually means that a student got the second best category of grades with a grade point average of 3.8â3.9. The highest student honor is a summa cum laude graduate. A summa cum laude graduate usually holds a grade point average of 4.0.
